Ready to Scale? Read This Before You Borrow

Growth takes capital.

Whether you’re scaling production, managing cash flow, or securing a large purchase order, the right financing makes all the difference. But here’s the catch: not all financing options are created equal.

Some funding structures offer flexibility and stability, while others can quietly eat into margins and create long-term financial strain. Understanding the differences between asset-backed loans, revenue-based financing, and other capital solutions is essential for making a decision that promotes growth.

That decision matters more than it used to. Equity has become harder to raise for consumer brands — venture money is at record highs but concentrated in AI, not CPG — so more brands are funding inventory with debt. Choosing the wrong structure now compounds over every purchase order you place.

This guide breaks down key financing options, hidden costs to watch for, and how to align financing with your business needs to scale with confidence.

Understanding Invoice & Inventory Financing

Many CPG brands mistakenly group working capital with merchant cash advances (MCAs), but the two work very differently. While MCAs take a cut of daily sales with high repayment costs, invoice and inventory financing offer structured, transparent terms that support cash flow and business growth without unexpected fees.

Here’s how the right financing can make a difference:

  • Transparent, predictable repayment tied to your business’s financial cycle
  • No aggressive daily or weekly deductions from revenue
  • Lower effective cost compared to MCAs
  • Helps optimize cash flow by covering supplier costs upfront

Common Myth: “Inventory and invoice financing is just another MCA.” Reality Check: Unlike MCAs, Settle doesn’t pull repayments from daily revenue, meaning your cash flow remains steady. Instead, you get a fixed repayment schedule that supports growth without cutting into margins.

What lenders don’t tell you about APR

Low advertised interest rates can be deceiving. Many financing providers, particularly MCAs, hide the actual cost of borrowing with additional fees and complex repayment structures.

To accurately compare financing options, calculating the true APR is essential. Unlike simple interest rates, APR accounts for:

  • Origination fees that increase the total loan cost.
  • Factor rates (common in MCAs) that make borrowing more expensive than it appears.
  • Revenue-sharing agreements that extend repayment indefinitely, cutting into cash flow.
  • Prepayment penalties that make it costly to refinance or exit a financing agreement early.

A factor rate is the clearest example. An advance of $100,000 at a 1.3 factor rate means $130,000 repaid, so the cost is $30,000. Spread over twelve months that reads like 30%. But an MCA is repaid out of daily sales, so two things happen at once: the money comes back in roughly six months, and you never hold the full $100,000 for those six months, because the balance falls with every remittance and averages closer to $50,000. A $30,000 cost on an average balance of $50,000 over half a year works out near 120% APR — four times the headline number. Run that calculation on every offer before you compare it to anything else, then see what Settle would offer with the working capital calculator.

New disclosure laws are making the real number harder to hide

Regulators have caught up with this. Ten states now require some form of commercial financing disclosure — California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Texas, Utah, and Virginia (Venable LLP). California goes furthest: SB 362 requires providers to express the charge as an annual percentage rate, and prohibits using the terms “interest” or “rate” in a manner that could reasonably mislead recipients. The APR has to appear whenever a provider states a charge, a pricing metric, or a financing amount. In Texas, providers and brokers of sales-based financing must register with the OCCC by December 31, 2026.

The practical takeaway for founders: an offer that avoids stating an APR is making a choice, and it is worth asking why. Ask for the total repayment amount and the expected repayment period, then work the rate out yourself.

When evaluating financing options, compare APR across products.

Hidden costs can gradually chip away at margins, making flexible, transparent financing a better long-term choice.

How the wrong financing can hurt growth

Choosing the wrong financing structure can create long-term financial burdens that outweigh short-term benefits. Some of the biggest risks include:

  • Navigating multiple financing products: Without a clear strategy, managing multiple financing options can quickly become complicated; for example, misaligned repayment terms and overlapping obligations may strain cash flow.
  • Inflexible repayment terms: Brands may struggle to keep up if repayment schedules don’t align with retail payment cycles.
  • Equity trade-offs: Some financing models require giving up ownership, limiting future decision-making power.
  • Profitability erosion: High borrowing costs eat into margins, leaving less room to reinvest in growth.
  • Timing mismatches: Inventory ties up cash for months between paying a supplier and collecting from a retailer. Financing that repays faster than that cycle turns a funding win into a cash flow problem.

When a more transparent, flexible financing solution might be the better fit

Many CPG brands struggle with financing options that lack transparency or flexibility. High APRs, rigid repayment schedules, and hidden fees make it difficult to predict cash flow and scale effectively.

That’s why Settle offers a financing alternative built for CPG brands, providing:

  • Clear, upfront terms with no hidden fees.
  • Flexible repayment structures that align with revenue cycles.
  • A financing model designed to support both short-term cash flow needs and long-term scalability.

Unlike traditional loans or high-cost revenue-based agreements, Settle helps brands scale without sacrificing profitability.

Common questions before you borrow

What is the difference between working capital financing and a merchant cash advance?

Working capital financing advances money against a specific business need, such as a purchase order or an invoice, and is repaid on a fixed schedule you can forecast. A merchant cash advance buys a share of your future sales and is repaid as a daily or weekly cut of revenue, so the faster you sell, the faster it takes your cash. The fixed schedule is what makes working capital plannable.

How do I calculate the true APR on a financing offer?

Take the total amount you will repay, subtract the amount you receive, and treat the difference as the cost. Divide that cost by the average balance you actually owe over the term, not by the original advance, then annualize it over the real repayment period rather than the stated one. Factor rates and daily repayment shorten the period and shrink the average balance at the same time, which is why the true rate lands so far above the headline.

Does a lender have to disclose an APR?

It depends on where your business is managed. Ten states require some form of commercial financing disclosure today, and California now requires the charge to be stated as an APR. Elsewhere the rules cover disclosure or provider registration without always mandating an APR figure. If a provider will not state one, ask for the total repayment amount and the expected repayment period, and calculate it yourself.

Will taking on debt cost me equity in my brand?

No. Debt financing is non-dilutive, so you keep your ownership stake and your decision-making power. That is the central trade-off against raising a round: debt costs interest and fees, equity costs a permanent share of the company.

Scaling confidently with the right cash flow strategy

Financing is necessary for many CPG and e-commerce brands, but choosing an ideal structure is key to growth without financial stress. By understanding the trade-offs, calculating real APRs, and aligning financing with business needs, brands can ensure every dollar borrowed fuels long-term success.
